B.C....Before Carhaulers?

carhauler
Carhauler Autohauler Methods of the 70s
There are a lot of things which seemed like a good idea at the time. Even for carhaulers and autohaulers you would think the idea of loading that factory new car onto the large spacious trailer would be the way it has always been done. Not so. Below you see a world without carhaulers and autotransport

I can only imagine how bad this is for the car to be moved like that.

Is The Economy Inching Forward?

Year five of the recession and I hear good news but like many people I am wondering is it just fluff or is it a true step to a real recovery. In trucking, we see good indicators but the overall plight of the public is not improving. In fact, with so many news sources saying so many things, it is hard to really know how relevant the news is in our daily lives.

Likewise, I search for indicators that do show ACTUAL economic change, not just a spin on things that really are not. One indicator that is good news, is the housing report. According to an article in Transport Topics, US home sales are on the rise.

This being true that is a really good sign. Someone somewhere has to be buying a home to get the prices to rise. Even if this is an artificial jump, rising home prices might help people refinance or sell their homes to get out from house payments that are beyond their means.

I would not read more into this than that. Home price increases are a small forward step in what appears to be a slow recovery. It is still a positive step though...

The Driver Shortage Is The Tip Of The Iceberg

It Will Be More Than A Driver Shortage..

A 100,000 man job shortage is predicted by trucking over the next ten years. That number is big, but is not insurmountable.

Accordingly,I have a few questions about that number.I have a sinking feeling that not just is that number artificially low but I think there are going to be shortages everywhere.

According to an article from Todayonline.com, 10,000 people will reach retirement age each day for the next 19 years. If you start doing the match you will see that.

That number gets real big, real fast

Do the math. Approximately 3-1/2 Americans will be 65 after one year. In 4 years that is 12 million and ultimately you get up to big numbers like 20 million plus by 2021.

Even if those Baby Boomers (ironic name for retirement era) work part time or lifestyle oriented business there are positions they will just not be able to fill.

Truck driving is one of those jobs, but think of all the other ones that this just wont cut it. Some positions have to be full time.

Back to trucking. My gut feeling is this shortage could easily go over 100,000 drivers but only time will tell.

Fuel Prices Are Dropping Again: The Silver Lining of 2013

Fuel Tenders

No one I know was excited to get their truck or autohauler back on the road today. It is the day after New Years and the Holiday season has ended. Wednesday, to many, is like a Monday....but wait.

I have the first silver lining of 2013 (where did 2012 go?). Fuel prices dropped again.

12/17/12 12/24/12 12/31/12 week ago year ago
U.S. 3.945 3.923 3.918 values are down -0.005 values are up 0.135

  California 4.051 4.052 4.045 values are down -0.007 values are down -0.001
*prices include all taxes

Well overall they dropped except in a few markets. Yes the economy is slower BUT the fear of inflation sending fuel prices soaring was very high in 2012. So, this is a bright spot. It does not mean recovery but low fuel prices can help.

The Great Trucker Smokeout

Of all the health risks truckers face, the top of the list is probably populated by smoking. As a society there is a never-ending flow of research informing the public how smoking can kill us. The television has ads which make you turn your head at the damage smoking has had on its victims. And with all that, I read in Fleetowner magazine that over 60% of all truckers smoke.

I am guessing the message of smoking health risks HAS reached truck and carhauler drivers. I am also guessing that the addictiveness of the habit, coupled with long journeys on the road, has made quitting seems less important. But now here is your chance to quit

September 20 is the one day Trucker smokeout where truck driving smokers are urged to quit smoking for at least one day. Just one simple day. This could be just the break you need to start your quitting process.
