Trucking May Be The Only Avenue Left..

I just read a story about how trucking is becoming one of the most popular fields to go into. As I scrolled down the page of the article, the comments from existing truckers said otherwise.

No problem. I respect everyone’s opinion and can see strong arguments for both sides. Trucking is difficult. The hours are long. Stories of mistreatment and abuse rampant. Many people drive recklessly around trucks. Your family life is strained by your time on the road. The industry is over regulated. Fuel prices are outrageous. The list goes on and on.

To be honest, the illusion that it is a desired field is probably not true. It is probably because the rest of the economy has become so marginal that people are becoming truckers.

Think about it. Millions of people cannot find any work. Hundreds of thousands of college graduates are working for little more than minimum wage because there are so few jobs for them. Other fields have seen their wages plummet.

Against that backdrop, with student loans due while you are living with your parents, trucking does not seem that bad. The modest wage increase is at least an increase. The companies themselves will at least make some effort to retain you since there are not as many people entering the field.

New truckers will probably come to the same conclusion in time that existing truckers have. In the meantime they will probably do it since it might be the only non-menial wage job that even exists

Tips To Avoid Being The Victim of Truck or Trailer Theft..

cargo theft tips for trucks and autohaulersMust see list of tips to prevent being a victim of cargo theft. I have attached a link to the original list on truckinginfo.com at the end of this post. There are a few things I want to ad. I can tell you criminals are always figuring out new ways to make today's countermeasures obsolete. Here a few pointers that will serve you well

  1. All crime predicates on opportunity. You don't see Fort Knox getting robbed
  2. Understand criminals are targeting everyone.
  3. Trust no one at truck stops or public places, some of them are just getting information and sizing up targets
  4. Do what I call the mom list. These are the things you can hear your mother telling you to do. Park in lighted places, lock doors, etc

here is the link to the article with some more suggestions

Plans for Southern California Truck-Only Freeway In the Works - Truckinginfo.com

Plans for Southern California Truck-Only Freeway In the Works

A flood of freight predicted to clog freeways in Southern California has spurred regional transportation officials to plan a truck-only east-west freeway between two major interstates, according to the Riverside Press-Enterprise.

The freeway, which is part of a 30-year regional transportation plan for the area, is intended to improve the movement of goods. Officials are considering the cargo highway between Interstate 710 in Commerce, Calif., and Interstate 15 in Ontario, Calif, adjacent to Highway 60.Freeway CongestionImage by Metro Transportation Library and Archive via Flickr

The specifics of the route aren't finalized, but there are tentative plans for a four-lane causeway.

According to the Press-Enterprise's article, "40% of the goods coming into the country arrive at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and that contributes mightily to the 13,000 trucks that on average cross from Los Angeles County into San Bernardino County along the 60 each day. The number of trucks is predicted to nearly double by 2035."

Between 25% and 40% of the trucks would be port-related, nearly 40% would serve local goods movement dependent industries, and the remainder would support domestic trade.

According to the Southern California Association of Governments, the truck freeway would relieve traffic on Highway 60 by as much as 85%.

There is also a heavy emphasis on the environment in the plan. In the future, the route could be strictly for zero-emission trucks that run on alternative fuels.

The freeway is estimated to cost more than $15 billion.

Cell Phone Causes Truck Accident

NTSB says trucker in 11-fatality accident was on cellphone, urges ban on devices for commercial drivers

Written by

James R. Carroll | The Courier-Journal
WASHINGTON — The National Transportation
Safety Board recommended Tuesday that drivers of commercial vehicles be
banned from using cellphones, except in emergencies, after citing a
cellphone call as the cause of a 2010 Kentucky accident that killed 11
people.

“We’re not here to be popular,”
said NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman, acknowledging the controversial
nature of the recommendation.

She urged drivers to understand the dangers of cellphone use and texting.

“Changing
behavior can start right now, for big-rig drivers and also for the rest
of us,” Hersman said. “When you are at the wheel, driving safely should
be your only focus. You owe it to yourself and all the people on the
road you put at risk, as we so tragically saw at Munfordville.”

Commentary: I would be curious to see what percentage of truck accidents involve carhaulers or
carhauling trailers. I have not seen any cellphone related autotransport accident reports online but it would
still be interesting to see how it is impacting the car carrier industry.
