Truckers Can Officially Enjoy Coffee

It seems at times, everything is bad for you and life has turned into one big rulebook. Don’t do this, Don’t eat that, Exercise, Stop for inspection, and so on. Occasionally we cut a break. And that break is…Caffeine.

I am reading in Overdrive Magazine that a study in Australia shows a significant connection between caffeine and alertness.

I am prepared to accept that. In fact the article uses important sounding words that make it sound so much more scientific than I ever dreamed. The article describes the miracle of caffeine with:

“caffeine is a ‘psycho stimulant’ that suppresses the innate  adenosine mediated drive to sleep.’”

That is a mouthful and maybe a really verbose way of saying coffee keeps you up or like my wife puts it ‘coffee keeps you moving.’

But who cares!

We officially can enjoy coffee. It is one of the few guilt free pleasures that is not linked to heart disease, hypertension, infection, psychosis, nightsweats, cotton mouth, allergic reaction,…etc. We now do not have to walk into the truck stop with that uncomfortable sense of knowing that some doctor said that coffee is bad for us. Even better we have official jargon to back up the right to drink coffee on the road.

In fact it is something healthy. We are not guzzling coffee while hauling cars all night. We are operating our Cottrell’s with a legal ‘psycho stimulant.” (wow that sounds good). We are rolling down the highway with a health beverage that fights our innate nature to go into adenosine cerebral arrest which is a fancy phrase I just made up meaning your tired. I would imagine every trucker or carhauler understands the value of a caffeinated pyscho-stimulant on an extended roadtrip.

On a side note, the article also mentions that there is a condition where you are exhausted all the time. It has a fancy medical term too but I just call it being a parent.

So pull into that truck stop and find that coffee stand…It is now “official”... it might help you stay awake!

*please note: this article is not a recommendation to drink coffee or consume caffeinated beverages of any kind or amount. This is a merely a humorous look at how feeling tired can potentially be mitigated by drinking coffee. Please observe the HOS rules and drink lots of water when you consume caffeine. This writer is not a doctor and is in no way giving any medical advice to anyone. In fact, consult with your physician before consuming coffee or caffeine products to make sure that is the proper remedy for any exhaustion or sleep problems involving adenosine or your bodies predisposition to got into a ‘adenosine mediated drive’ to feel tired or sleep. Be safe out there.

Carhauler Benchmarks And Techniques

Excellent Use Of Articulating Decks By A Carhauler / Autohauler Professional

Handling vans or larger vehicles can often seem challenging when loading a carhauler or autohauler trailer. I saw this load by Dave Zamzow and was impressed with how he used the articulating decks to house the sprinter vans. By simply flattening out the carhauler decking he was able to secure the vans and load them comfortably on the trailer.

Carhauler Autohauler Methods of the 70s
There are a lot of things which seemed like a good idea at the time. Even for carhaulers and autohaulers you would think the idea of loading that factory new car onto the large spacious trailer would be the way it has always been done. Not so. Below you see a world without carhaulers and autotransport.

I can only imagine how bad this is for the car to be moved like that.

Fair And Equal Protection

With all the technology, all the media, all the knowledge, and all the challenges it is easy for us to lose sight of the big picture as an industry. As an industry we will never be divorced from regulation.

That is understandable.

CSA error
Human error, and the need to uphold safe roads, forces regulation on us. The regulation still has to come under the umbrella of democratic principals. All regulatory agencies have to be fair in how rules and regulations are applied. This is a non negotiable point. On a national level it is known as equal justice under the law.

This in mind, why is their such a fairness gap in the CSA results. After almost three years it has been repeatedly documented that:
  • The CSA doesn’t have ANY data on a majority of carriers.
  • The FMCSA recommends the use of carriers who have been inspected, penalizing the vast majority of carriers who have not.
  • Due to their fleet size, larger carriers have lots of inspections to balance out the impact of a bad CSA score.
  • Many of the large fleets have electronic equipment that allow them to bypass many weigh in stations.
  • The FMCSA actually assigns a random high CSA score to carriers without inspection records which assures they WILL get inspected. So if this first inspection is bad, they will immediately feel the impact from companies that see them as too risky because of one inspection.
In fact, if you look at how how it is setup, it appears that the system is overwhelmingly designed to benefit large carriers. This in itself is unacceptable. Government regulations should be there to protect the people, not regulate small business people into bankruptcy.

A few thoughts...

I think that CSA scores should not even be published if a certain number of inspections have not taken place for small carriers. The only exception should be if a pattern of two or more serious violations is discovered where public safety is at risk.

Also, the FMCSA should not make recommendations to use or not use a carrier. If a carrier has not been inspected, the records should just say " no inspection recorded yet."

But most of all, you cannot let a system continue which is running trucking companies out of business due to unfair standards. Until the kinks of this system are worked out, we should preserve the drivers and truckers we still have to avoid deepening the effects of the driver shortage.

Your thoughts..?

Fuel Prices Are Dropping Again: The Silver Lining of 2013

Fuel Tenders
Fuel Tenders (Photo credit: Tabbymom Jen)
No one I know was excited to get their truck or autohauler back on the road today. It is the day after New Years and the Holiday season has ended. Wednesday, to many, is like a Monday....but wait.

I have the first silver lining of 2013 (where did 2012 go?). Fuel prices dropped again.

12/17/12 12/24/12 12/31/12 week ago year ago
U.S. 3.945 3.923 3.918 values are down -0.005 values are up 0.135
East Coast (PADD1) 4.027 4.006 4.006 no change 0.000 values are up 0.162
  New England (PADD1A) 4.155 4.153 4.154 values are up 0.001 values are up 0.181
  Central Atlantic (PADD1B) 4.134 4.112 4.105 values are down -0.007 values are up 0.173
  Lower Atlantic (PADD1C) 3.923 3.899 3.904 values are up 0.005 values are up 0.150
Midwest (PADD2) 3.918 3.893 3.885 values are down -0.008 values are up 0.202
Gulf Coast (PADD3) 3.847 3.833 3.830 values are down -0.003 values are up 0.121
Rocky Mountain (PADD4) 3.866 3.791 3.746 values are down -0.045 values are down -0.090
West Coast (PADD5) 3.997 3.989 3.991 values are up 0.002 values are up 0.012
West Coast less California 3.933 3.915 3.928 values are up 0.013 values are up 0.028
  California 4.051 4.052 4.045 values are down -0.007 values are down -0.001
*prices include all taxes

Well overall they dropped except in a few markets. Yes the economy is slower BUT the fear of inflation sending fuel prices soaring was very high in 2012. So, this is a bright spot. It does not mean recovery but low fuel prices can help.

The Road To Recovery In The Northeast: Restoring the Ports

The road to recovery after Sandy is going to be a long exhausting process. One area where the disaster continues to make everyday life difficult is in the ports. I read in a story from NorthJersey.com that the New Jersey ports are still heavily damaged and the flow of goods through them is painfully slow.

Here is what is going wrong:

  • There are a shortage of chassis
  • Which means trucks are forced to wait for hours
  • Which means goods are staying on the docks longer and longer
  • Which means less material is being hauled out for the recovery effort.

Trucks are hauling a fraction of the goods they hauled before Sandy due to the delays. Even worse, ships are being delayed because of the bottleneck I described. While there are lot of different things required for total recovery, getting the flow of trucks, ships, and materials back and forth at a normal pace would really help speed up the timetable. Obviously easier said then done.
