A Possible Bumpy Ride On The Marijuana Super ‘HIGH”-way?

I have ignored this subject for weeks. After the election I did not really know what to say about

legalized marijuana and its effect on transportation

To be honest I still did not want to touch it. So when I saw Overdrive magazine broach the issue I figured it was time I joined the dialogue. For months I have lived behind some simple reassurances that have shielded me from giving the issue deep thought. I am sure you have heard them as well. Here we go:

  1. Legalized or not, drivers cannot be under the influence of alcohol or drugs...period.
  2. The DOT monitoring systems are the most meticulous and efficient they have ever been in inspecting and tracking violators.
  3. The roads are safer than they have ever been.
  4. The quality of drivers has improved.

So why even give it a second thought? Well a few questions come to mind.

One Possible Scenario

What do you do if a driver leaves Colorado and goes to work for a company where marijuana is not legal. The driver has never driven while under the influence but has used marijuana recreationally. He takes the drug test for employment and has traces of marijuana in his system.

He passes right? The traces are from a marijuana legal state. Clean driving record. All is well.

What happens when a another employee at the same company with a clean driving record (who is registered to be living in a non marijuana legal) state has trace elements of marijuana in their system.

Does he get suspended? What if he does but finds out a driver from a marijuana legal state did not get suspended and he takes the case to court for a long drawn out court battle.

Remember ANY court battle win or lose will mean:

  • energy
  • time
  • resources
  • questionable or even bad publicity

Another Possible Scenario

A driver living in a non legal marijuana state has a clean driving record. He tests positive for marijuana but claims he was living with someone else in a marijuana legal state. So what do you do?

In this case do you risk a court battle by suspending the driver.  Now can all the drivers claim this excuse?

What if the insurance companies see that a large number of drivers have used marijuana and their statistics show them that drivers who have used marijuana have a higher incidence of accidents than those who do not..so your rates go up.

I could go on and on. I am just making a point that this issue is not that simple and it is going to make some waves.

I would love to hear your thoughts

I Doubt Any Carhauler Has Gone Down The Road And Not Thought Of This One...

truck logo and lettering
Gas continues its schizophrenic pattern (prices going back and forth).  Will the price go up OR down today and what impact will it have, as you and carhauler trailer go down the road? All good questions and I wish I had exact answers.. Is this oil's big push downward or are we just prolonging the inevitable.

The question is will the constant fluctuations eventually just mask overall price increase trends  I am not really sure. What I am sure about is that we (The nation) need to make energy policy and the growth of our alternate energy options the "Moon Challenge of this decade" Yes-putting a man on the moon was expensive and for many pie in the sky dreaming...until it happened

I know there could be options to power carhaulers with multiple fuels. I know this could drive fuel prices down. We just have to commit to being the Worlds Energy Supplier AND DO IT

Carhauler and The Hours Of Service Rule...

Every carhauler, car carrier company, autotransport fleet, or heavy haul knows that the hours of service rules have changed. The government is monitoring BUT they were nice enough to publish what things would be perceived in the log books as violations. This is kind of like a test where you are given the answers. Just fill the test out correctly and clearly...and you pass.

I have the listed the link below the pdf with multiple examples. I did pull a sample from the pdf of some of the scenarios they flagged as violations. Definitely worth a look by any carhauler before their next trip

Will It Affect Carhaulers?: Mexico tightens rules, lowers weight on trucks - KFVS12 News & Weather Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, Poplar Bluff

Carhauler for sale
This is the next chink in the Mexican trucking plan. Is the entire Mexican trucking industry going to change to fit what the American government wants? I find this difficult to believe. Weight limits are a serious matter in the American Trucking industry. Whenever I talk to carhaulers weight is one of the biggest issues. Are there carriers just suddenly going to be moving less because that is the way we want it?

As far as impact on the carhauler industry, I don't think there is going to be an invasion of Mexican run carhaulers but it still would be unfair if Mexican truckers ever get exemptions to have heavier trucks than we allow.

Gas Pickup Trucks Could Be Profitable For The Carhauler...And The Carhauler Industry.

I saw an incredible article in the Wall Street Journal which is great news for carhaulers and the autohauling industry. Natural gas capabilities are begin introduced by auto manufacturers on pick up trucks. This is huge for the average carhauler because

  1. Lower fuel price vehicles can help revive the economy
  2. More sales of pickup trucks for consumers wanting cheaper fuel will spur the carhauler industry
  3. You combine economic recovery with affordable natural gas vehicles and the carhauler industry could grow really fast

Straps versus Chains

Straps versus Chains

One of the biggest dilemmas for carhaulers is whether to buy a strap unit or a chain unit. While chains are still popular among many autohaulers, many manufacturers will only allow their cars to be hauled with straps as the tie down method. Some Manufacturers like Toyota require 100% compliance with the total strap use policy

Strap trailers make it easier to secure your loads
The reasons are pretty simple. Chains put pressure on the frame of the car. After one or two trips with chains there WILL be damage to the vehicle. While chains offer the ability to reduce height, straps are much safer on the frame of a vehicle. Some vehicles don’t even have eyelits any more for chains. This is a risk that car sellers just do not want to take. Thus a migration has begun for many carhaulers and fleet managers to begin outfitting their vehicles with straps or purchasing new strap units altogether.

Another huge advantage that Straps have over chains is that they put a lot less pressure on the driver. Chains require the driver to secure the vehicle on top of and under the ramp. This requires additional reach and strain on both your back, shoulders, and knees. Over time this can lead to a repetitive strain injury. Straps prevent this by requiring that the vehicle only be secured on top of the ramp from a standing position. For this reason alone straps have a huge advantage for the long term health of the driver.

Regardless there is still a big following of carhaulers who prefer chains. There are some interesting solutions. Some drivers purchase straps and use them in tandem with their chain unit. “Some carhaulers come in and buy 30 to 40 straps at a time to outfit their chain units” according to E.Jacoby, carhauler specialist at East Coast Truck and Trailer. As long as the customer does not require a truck that was designed for strap use only, this is a versatile solution.

While we still sell a lot of chain units, strap units are definitely the future. Manufacturer mandates ,coupled with huge improvements in driver loading ergonomics, give strap units a lot of appeal. Here at East Coast Truck and Trailer we still carry both types. We also sell straps individually that are made in America, both in our store and online. Whatever direction you choose to go, we have you covered.
