“Microturbine” testing launched for heavy trucks

“Microturbine” testing launched for heavy trucks

From FleetOwner Magazine

Truck makers Kenworth Truck Co. and Peterbilt Motors Co. – both divisions of Paccar Corp. – are joining forces with Capstone Turbine Corp. on a project to test a “microturbine”-based hybrid-electric truck design for Class 7 and Class 8 platforms.

Capstone said Kenworth already has a test truck equipped with one of its C65 microturbines currently running at the Paccar Test Center in Washington state, with Peterbilt’s test vehicle still in the assembly process.

“These programs are an important first in a several step process to potentially developing a
commercially available microturbine-based hybrid product in the next several years,” said Darren Jamison, Capstone’s president & CEO.

What does precise fuel injection mean to your Peterbilt 388 and your Cottrell Carhauler?

By Michael Saks
Editor of Haulin

Precise fuel injectors is the method by which the Peterbilt Cummins ISX15 engine receives fuel. It is one of the most sophisticated, environmentally sound ways of getting fuel into a truck engine. It means that you are getting the most of your fuel dollar but helping to save the environment as well. Most autohaulers are to busy to worry about every little environmental concern, but its nice to know that the Peterbilt 388 Cummins ISX15 Engine has done that for you.

More road visibility for today's Carhauler

The Peterbilt 388 cab gives todays carhauler more visibility on the road

Peterbilt truckMore visibility for the carhauler: The Peterbilt 388 sloped hoodOne huge advantage to the Peterbilt 388 is its sloping hood. As simple as this may seem the hood gives the Peterbilt driver more vision. On todays crowded roadways, huge tractor trailers or car haulers can not afford to lose even the slightest awareness of what is in front of them. Even a few inches on the sloped hood can make the difference in keeping truckers and carhaulers out of harms way.

The Alternative Energy Carhauler

How feasible are alternative energy vehicles for the carhauler industry?

by Michael Saks
Haulin Editor

With gas still creeping up at a terrifying pace, I can only guess that at least one autohauler has wrestled with the idea of alternative fuel. While I see no plans for a Cottrell carhauler powered by alternate energy it is something to think about. Why wait to have an alternate energy autotransport when gas has become so expensive that the balance of the independent carhaulers are out of business?

Carhauler Driver Shortage...How bad can it get?

Peterbilt truck model with two rectangular hea...Image via WikipediaHow Bad Will the Shortage of Carhaulers Be?

Why not just increase the wages.

It is inevitable, the carhauler driver shortage is going to lead to higher wages. Every expense a carhauler faces is gown up. Fuel, equipment, taxes..are just a few of the areas that are running the costs of autotransport through the roof. Someone has to get into their car carrier and transport the autos from the manufacturer to the dealer. So either people are going to get their own cars or autohaulers are going to make more bringing delivering them.

I don't think there are industry awards for the largest specialized haul or the largest flatbed BUT if there were I think this would be the winner. I saw this online and realized it was not photoshopped but carry an actual jet that crashed in the Hudson river.
