American Trucking Association Report
ARLINGTON, Va. 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --

After a dip during the Great Recession, the U.S. freight economy, particularly for trucking, is projected to grow significantly in the years ahead, according to American Trucking Associations' U.S. Freight Transportation Forecast to 2022.

The Forecast, the product of a collaboration between ATA, IHS Global Insight and Martin Labbe Associates, lays out the current state of the freight economy where trucking is the leading mode of transportation and projects an even more robust role for trucks in the future.

"The trucking industry continues to dominate the freight transportation industry in terms of both tonnage and revenue, comprising 67% of tonnage and 81% of revenue in 2010," ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello wrote in this year's forecast.

Overall, total freight tonnage is expected to grow by 24% by 2022, and revenue for the freight transportation industry is projected to rise 66% in that same timeframe. Trucking's share of that market will rise to 70% by 2022, though the industry's share of freight revenues will only increase to 81.4% from 81.2%.

In other surface modes, rail's overall share of tonnage will fall to 14.6% in 2022 from 15.3% in the baseline year of 2010. However, intermodal tonnage will rise 6.6% a year between 2011 and 2016, and 5.5% annually through 2022. Revenues for intermodal transportation will jump from $11.1 billion in 2010 to $30.7 billion in 2022.

Intermodal market share sets record in first quarter

By Successful Dealer Staff

Intermodal transport’s share of U.S. long-haul truck traffic reached record highs in the first quarter of 2010 a recent analysis by FTR Associates shows. Both total intermodal movements and movements of domestic intermodal equipment reached new market share highs. Intermodal’s share of U.S. long-haul (550+ miles) movements of international and domestic containerized freight was estimated to be 13.5 percent in the first quarter of 2010. The analysis, which utilizes equipment type, size and ownership data from the Intermodal Association of North America, is contained in the May issue of the FTR Freight Focus Series: Intermodal Update.

“This marks the fourth consecutive share increase for intermodal,” says Lawrence Gross, senior consultant for FTR and principal author of the Intermodal Update. “The sector was hitting on all cylinders during the first quarter. Domestic sector market share resumed growing after a pause in the fourth quarter of last year, continuing a solid upward trend that began as early as the third quarter of 2007. Meanwhile, the international sector continued to recover from its pronounced downturn, with international intermodal shipments growing faster than overall long-haul truck. This is also an indication that the previous trend of such shipments being diverted to all-water routing via the Panama Canal has abated.”

Gross expects the future to hold additional good news for intermodal. “The stars are aligning for what could be an acceleration in intermodal share growth. Active truck capacity is coming into balance with demand, and even a modest increase in freight demand could lead to shortages of truck drivers and hence, truck capacity, resulting in more opportunity for intermodal. Increases in fuel prices and the continued rebound in international shipments will also aid share growth.”

Economy Growing?

Fed Report Shows Improved Transport Activity

The U.S. economy improved in most of the Federal Reserve’s 12 districts in March, with the transportation sector improving in most areas, the Fed said.

Overall economic activity increased somewhat across all districts except St. Louis, which reported “softened” conditions, the Fed said in its latest “beige book” report released Wednesday.

Freight transport executives in the Cleveland district said shipping volumes continued to show gradual improvement and that they expected that to continue, although “profit margins remain constrained due to overcapacity and rising fuel costs, which have to be absorbed into the current rate structure.”

Kansas City saw a steady rebound in manufacturing and transportation activity, resulting in some new hires. While sales improved, some firms noted concerns about rising fuel costs.

Reports from Dallas-area transportation service firms were generally positive, with strong overseas demand pushing up intermodal cargo volumes. Parcel shippers also saw a pickup in demand.

A handful of firms said they planned on partially reinstating employer matches to employee 401(k) plans or on giving small pay increases, the Fed said.

The Fed releases its beige book report eight times a year. Wednesday’s report, which covered the period of Feb. 23 through April 4, was prepared by the Minneapolis Fed
