The Road To Recovery In The Northeast: Restoring the Ports

The road to recovery after Sandy is going to be a long exhausting process. One area where the disaster continues to make everyday life difficult is in the ports. I read in a story from NorthJersey.com that the New Jersey ports are still heavily damaged and the flow of goods through them is painfully slow.

Here is what is going wrong:

  • There are a shortage of chassis
  • Which means trucks are forced to wait for hours
  • Which means goods are staying on the docks longer and longer
  • Which means less material is being hauled out for the recovery effort.

Trucks are hauling a fraction of the goods they hauled before Sandy due to the delays. Even worse, ships are being delayed because of the bottleneck I described. While there are lot of different things required for total recovery, getting the flow of trucks, ships, and materials back and forth at a normal pace would really help speed up the timetable. Obviously easier said then done.
