The FBI found a common thread to the scam: drivers and dispatchers with foreign accents, fake trucking company records and loads of meat that never showed up.

The thieves convinced transportation companies they were experienced haulers who could truck beef, pork and cheese from Texas, Idaho and Kansas facilities and drive them to their destinations, according to an ongoing FBI investigation.

A federal search warrant affidavit said the men — who made off with nearly $800,000 worth of food last year — also hit plants in Jerome, Idaho; Holcomb, Kan.; and Madison, Neb.
By the time frantic freight brokers called about their missing shipments, the unidentified thieves were long gone, the affidavit said.

FBI investigators have identified at least nine meat and cheese heists in 2011, including $137,750 worth of beef stolen in June from two Friona plants.

Scammers also targeted Nor-Am Cold Storage in Plainview in August, when they stole $38,496 worth of beef, according to the affidavit.

No one has been charged.

Straps versus Chains

One of the biggest dilemmas for carhaulers is whether to buy a strap unit or a chain unit. While chains are still popular among many autohaulers, many manufacturers will only allow their cars to be hauled with straps as the tie down method. Some Manufacturers like Toyota require 100% compliance with the total strap use policy

Strap trailers make it easier to secure your loads

The reasons are pretty simple. Chains put pressure on the frame of the car. After one or two trips with chains there WILL be damage to the vehicle. While chains offer the ability to reduce height, straps are much safer on the frame of a vehicle. Some vehicles don’t even have eyelits any more for chains. This is a risk that car sellers just do not want to take. Thus a migration has begun for many carhaulers and fleet managers to begin outfitting their vehicles with straps or purchasing new strap units altogether.

Another huge advantage that Straps have over chains is that they put a lot less pressure on the driver. Chains require the driver to secure the vehicle on top of and under the ramp. This requires additional reach and strain on both your back, shoulders, and knees. Over time this can lead to a repetitive strain injury. Straps prevent this by requiring that the vehicle only be secured on top of the ramp from a standing position. For this reason alone straps have a huge advantage for the long term health of the driver.

Regardless there is still a big following of carhaulers who prefer chains. There are some interesting solutions. Some drivers purchase straps and use them in tandem with their chain unit. “Some carhaulers come in and buy 30 to 40 straps at a time to outfit their chain units” according to E.Jacoby, carhauler specialist at East Coast Truck and Trailer. As long as the customer does not require a truck that was designed for strap use only, this is a versatile solution.

While we still sell a lot of chain units, strap units are definitely the future. Manufacturer mandates ,coupled with huge improvements in driver loading ergonomics, give strap units a lot of appeal. A December spike in preliminary commercial trucks net orders last year is generating a more positive outlook for truck sales in 2012, according to industry analysts.

ACT Research Co. reported that preliminary net orders of Class 8 trucks in North America topped 30,100 units in December – higher than forecasted, the firm stressed – while net orders for medium-duty Classes 5-7 vehicles exceeded 13,300 units.

“This is a really happy place to be,” Steve Tam, ACT’s vp-commercial vehicle sector, told Fleet Owner. “This level of order intake was better than anticipated and was more than sufficient to support ACT’s 2012 forecast. Even if orders don’t continue to increase sequentially, we have enough of a backlog cushion that our outlook remains solid.”

Tam noted that the commercial vehicle order backlog now stands at 130,000 units, a figure he describes as “quite healthy,” which more than supports ACT’s total 2012 commercial truck sales forecast of 296,000 units for the North American market.

Two plead guilty in mail fraud case targeting truckers

Carhaulers Watch out...This New Type Of Con Accuses Truckers of Accidents That They Did Not Committ

Michael J. McMahon, 55, and Dawn C. Velapoldi, 43, pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiracy to commit mail fraud for reporting fake vehicle crashes targeting commercial truckers and receiving more than $168,000 in insurance claims, according to a press release from the U.S. Dept. of Justice.

According to an indictment returned by a federal grand jury, McMahon and Velapoldi reported fake motor vehicle crashes to fraudulently obtain compensation for damage to vehicles they said was caused by commercial trucks at numerous locations throughout New York.

Since 2006, prosecutors said McMahon and Velapoldi made at least 83 claims to trucking companies about the fake accidents. The claims stated a commercial truck sideswiped a sports utility vehicle, causing damage to the driver’s side of the vehicle. In each case, McMahon and Velapoldi provided the name of a different purported claimant.

Truck makers Kenworth Truck Co. and Peterbilt Motors Co. – both divisions of Paccar Corp. – are joining forces with Capstone Turbine Corp. on a project to test a “microturbine”-based hybrid-electric truck design for Class 7 and Class 8 platforms.

Capstone said Kenworth already has a test truck equipped with one of its C65 microturbines currently running at the Paccar Test Center in Washington state, with Peterbilt’s test vehicle still in the assembly process.

“These programs are an important first in a several step process to potentially developing a
commercially available microturbine-based hybrid product in the next several years,” said Darren Jamison, Capstone’s president & CEO.

Overall, as long as these changes dont run the price of the cabs up anymore, the energy savings could be good for the carhauler. The challenge will be the details. Can the manufacturers make these changes without spending millions to retool?

TransCore's North American Freight Index climbed 36% last month compared to November 2010, making it the consecutive month with the highest same-month volume since 2005.

Compared to October, spot market freight volume slipped 4.4%, which is a normal seasonal trend. Spot market freight volume has declined in November since the company established the Index in 1996, with the historical average decline being 15%.

Dry van, the predominant equipment type, rates rose 6.3% compared to November 2010 and increased 0.7% compared to October. Refrigerated ("reefer") van rates rose 3.0% year-over-year and 1.9% month-over-month. National average rates for flatbeds increased 6.4% compared to the same-month in 2010 but declined 4.0% compared to October.

Rate information is also provided by TransCore's Truckload Rate Index and reflects line-haul rates excluding fuel surcharge. Truckload freight rates increased year-over-year on the spot market in November for all equipment types. When compared to October, rates rose for dry van and refrigerated ("reefer") in November but declined for flatbeds.

My guess is that a hands free, voice dial system that is sold aftermarket will proliferate to compensate for the ban. For the car hauler, eliminating the risk of any accident is probably worth it

A majority of top automakers said their U.S. sales increased in October from a year ago, Associated Press reported.

Ford Motor Co. said its sales rose 6%, led by higher SUV and truck sales, while General Motors Co. reported a smaller 2% increase.

Ford Explorer SUV sales tripled from a year ago, AP said.

Other automakers reporting higher sales were Chrysler Group LLC with a 27% jump, Nissan Motor Co. with an 18% increase, Hyundai Motor Co. with 23% higher sales and Volkswagen AG with a 40% leap.

The DOT has bitten off more than it can chew...

Concerning Mexican Trucking in the United States I saw an article that the Department of Transportation is having logistical concerns about the program. Here is a quote from the DOT that was in the article:Image via Wikipedia

“We found that FMCSA has not identified the specific process it will use to comply with five requirements for conducting 50 percent of the pre-authority safety audits (PASA) and compliance reviews onsite in Mexico. FMCSA plans to abide by the law, but has not finalized where it will conduct the reviews,” the OIG’s office said. “We also found that FMCSA has not yet addressed certain issues for implementing the pilot program. Specifically, FMCSA has not (1) issued site–specific plans for checking drivers and trucks at the border, (2) established a system to verify driver and truck eligibility for the pilot program, (3) issued an implementation plan nor acquired electronic monitoring devices for use in the pilot program and (4) conducted pilot program training for inspection personnel at the border and within the United States.”

Let me sum up this bureaucratic doublespeak.............

The DOT doesnt have the resources to implement this
The number of Mexican trucks that are non regulation is staggering
The DOT and the White House are already getting Congressional backlash over endless regulation
This is a BIG HOT MESS..do we even have the personnel to check every truck coming across the border for drugs, safety, regulation...etc?

Toll Hikes Will Hurt Carhaulers

I hope you dont have to haul cars through New York or New Jersey. According to a Fleet Owner article the cost of the tolls to go through these places is about to go up over 180%. Naturally this affects all truckers, including carhaulers and autotransports. I am trying to be open minded here instead of just reacting, I mean the governments of New York and New Jersey had to have thought this through.

Yes, in the short term, this means more tax revenue for the state which will benefit taxpayers BUT...lets look at what else it means for the taxpayer..

Every good that is shipped in and out of this area is going to now cost more, a lot more

This means the cost of food, clothes, services,..etc are going up exponentially for the citizens of these areas (and I guess to a certain degree New England since trucks have to pass through New York and New Jersey to get to New England)

You will probably have carhaulers who outright refuse to go to these places because the cost has become outrageous

Essentially any dollar of tax revenue is going to be offset by higher costs for consumers..so what is the point.

I can tell you without a doubt that any car being transported via car carrier will cost a lot more to ship.

Good Planning Can Reduce Carhauler Fuel Costs

Image via WikipediaI read in an article that Wal-Marts total energy savings program is beginning to pay off. The article claims that smart planning through better logistics has helped to mitigate the impact of fuel price increases by over 60%. Wow! I know Wal Mart had main strides in using alternative energy vehicles but had no idea that simple planning was making such a difference to their bottom line.

I think there is a lesson here for carhaulers and other car carriers. Good planning, in the form of proper maintenance and logistics, can make a massive difference in your fuel costs. Just sitting down and looking for simple ways for drivers to make better route choices and improved driving maneuvers can help you be more profitable. Its certainly something to think about…

10/4/2011 Diesel Prices Down Again; Crude Oil At One-Year Low

National on-highway diesel prices fell by 3.7 cents last week to average $3.749 per gallon. The pace of falling prices decelerated from the previous week's 4.7-cent drop.

Prices fell in every major region, but varied somewhat. The central Atlantic dropped the most at 4.1 cents, the Rocky Mountains the least at 2.1 cents. As usual, the Gulf Coast claimed the lowest price at $3.693 per gallon.

California, like last week, is still the only region with prices north of the four-dollar mark, but at $4.007, just barely.

Carhaulers and Truckers: Gaurd Your Cargo!

As if you didnt have enough to worry about as a carhauler or trucker, this article popped up to remind us that cargo theft is one more thing to watch out for. Cargo Theft has always been a problem but I would imagine with a strained economy theft and crime in general are on the rise. It is of paramount importance to protect your autotransport and its valuable cargo as their are plenty of thieves waiting to lift your car carrier or truck. Heres a few tips adapted from Transport Topics

* Lock your trailer and cargo at all times. Thieves want to look at the cargo to find targets. With some vehicles, like a non enclosed carhauler
trailer this is not possible, but with many normal trucking loads it is

* Keep your truck and cargo in view at all times. Some thieves will simply back under your trailer and drive off with your cargo

* Be Careful what you say to strangers on the cb or truck stop, many cargo thieves use this information to target their prey

* Be ready for any possible scam scenario-even a minor accident is a tactic crooks use to distract you while your cargo is raided or hijacked

* Check your vehicle before leaving for your destination for marks alerting thieves which truck to steal

* Check paperwork and authorization before transferring any load. Thieves will pose as the legitimate receiver so you transfer your cargo to them

This is a lot to do but at the very least don't make it easier for criminals to take your car hauler or truck. If they don't know what your carrying or your cargo is watched often, it will be very hard to have your vehicle or car carrier stolen.

NTSB says trucker in 11-fatality accident was on cellphone, urges ban on devices for commercial drivers

WASHINGTON — The National Transportation
Safety Board recommended Tuesday that drivers of commercial vehicles be
banned from using cellphones, except in emergencies, after citing a
cellphone call as the cause of a 2010 Kentucky accident that killed 11
people.

“We’re not here to be popular,”
said NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman, acknowledging the controversial
nature of the recommendation.

She urged drivers to understand the dangers of cellphone use and texting.

“Changing
behavior can start right now, for big-rig drivers and also for the rest
of us,” Hersman said. “When you are at the wheel, driving safely should
be your only focus. You owe it to yourself and all the people on the
road you put at risk, as we so tragically saw at Munfordville.”

Commentary: I would be curious to see what percentage of truck accidents involve carhaulers or

carhauling trailers. I have not seen any cellphone related autotransport accident reports online but it would

still be interesting to see how it is impacting the car carrier industry.

Carhaulers are a small distinctive segment of the transportation industry. Regardless of our size and specialization, we are still subject to the trials and tribulations of the average trucker since we fall under the same regulations.

Recently the White House is proposing seven new regulations that WILL cost the transportation industry billions. I can tell you that those billions are going to strain the economy beyond what it can bear.

There is already a shortage of carhaulers (as well as other truckers). Couple this with increased costs it is safe to say the cost of moving goods will become so expensive that the public wont be able to afford cars to drive business for car carriers.

Kristina Pinna, 20, died this morning after a car hauler rear-ended the car she was riding in with her mother and pushed it in to oncoming traffic, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

Pinna's mother, Debra Hildebrand, is in good condition after the accident, which took place around 6:22 a.m. in a construction zone on Interstate 35E at County Road 14 in Lino Lakes.

The mother and daughter, both of North Branch, were braking for traffic in the southbound lane on I-35E when the vehicle hit them, sending them in to the car in front of them and then spinning them around in to the northbound lane, where it was broadsided by a semi, said Lt. Eric Roeske, spokesperson for the department of public safety.

Pinna died at the scene. Hildebrand, 46, was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul where she remained as of this afternoon.

The women's family could not be reached for comment.

Neither the driver of the car hauler, 35-year-old Matthew Hauer of Red Wing, nor the driver of the semi, 62-year-old Richard Kawalek of Mora, was injured. The driver of the car rear-ended by Hildebrand was also not injured.

When I see pictures like this I only hope they are photoshopped by one of the worlds greatest graphic designers. Unfortunately I dont think they are BUT there is hope!. Always use a height stick when your carhauler is about to pass under a bridge, through a tunnel or really anything that is a narrow passage over or through something that has a roof. Even the change your car carrier could end up like this easily justifies the cost of a height stick and the time to stop.

Carhauler Cargo Fire.....was it tampering or a freak accident?

I read recently of a Carhauler that had part of its cargo set ablaze in Duluth and even though the report does not say arson, it seems possible since the autotransport was just sitting there parked. It also makes me wonder if there should be precautions to protect the cargo of a car carrier when the trailer is not moving or is in a parking lot. While there is a chance that it was a freak accident I pulled some cargo protection tips from a site I found online at Landlinemag.com. The steps to protect your Carhauler when not moving are:

• Keep your vehicle in sight when parked;
• Take the keys out;
• Don’t allow the tractor to idle unattended;
• Use high-security theft deterrents;
• Be aware of the high-crime cities you are traveling through;
• Vary your route to avoid becoming predictable;
• Do not offer information about your cargo or destination over the radio.

While this may seem extreme, there is no way to make up the lost time of a load that was not delivered or was delivered damage. Even if the insurance covers the damage you are still out the time that you spent hauling the cars so be cautious!

NEWELL - A Columbus man is being held in the Northern Regional Jail, Moundsville on $5,000 bond after his arrest for DUI with a carhauler

Deputy Scott Little of the Hancock County Sheriff's Office responded to C. Hackett Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge in Newell around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday after owners reported vehicles delivered to the dealership were damaged.

Little said after speaking with the driver and conducting a field sobriety test, he charged John F. Strohm II with DUI. He said Strohm had the odor of alcohol on his breath, and a blood-alcohol level of .179.

Strohm was still in the Northern Regional Jail on Thursday, Little said. The trucking company is based in Illinois.
"Hackett's would normally be closed about the time the driver arrived," Little said. "They had a good sales day, though, and they were still there doing paperwork."

Strohm was driving a Freightliner carhauler semi, which Little referred to as "an 80,000 pound missile" with the driver in an intoxicated state. "Not only did he drive an 80,000 pound vehicle while drunk, he also drove the four vehicles off the trailer."

Little said there were four vehicles on the trailer and at some point along Ohio Route 7, he "wrecks into a few things and just annihilates the vehicles. They were scratched and one had a broken window," Little said. "He's not sure what he hit, or where. We're still looking into that, because he wasn't able to tell us."

Strohm didn't think the business was open, and unloaded the vehicles, Little said. He said C. Hackett owners believe Strohm was not going to come into the business. He planned to leave the damaged vehicles in the lot, and drive away.

An 80ton Carhauler with a drunk driver sounds like a recipe for disaster. I dont know how the driver even got the carhauler there in one piece to begin with. A fully loaded carhauler is not aerodynamic and is not able to move very fast making the reaciton time of a drunk car-hauler driver dangerously slow.

An Experienced Carhauler is no match for Gravity on a steep incline

A multi ton carhauler on the San Gabriel mountains are not an easy run for your trailer
I am one of many who followed the story about a carhauler charged with second degree murder charge by crashing his trailer into another motorist. The defense claim it was brake failure due to the steep incline of the road the carhauler was on. Also the defense claims their was no runway for the carhauler to put his rig when he lost control. The State claims that a fireman warned the carhauler that the mountains he was about to drive in were way to steep. I don’t know who is at fault.

What I do know is that any machine, including a multi ton carhauler with a state of the art engine is no match for mother nature. The incline in the San Gabriel mountains was just too much for any carhauler, regardless of what make or model. The driver even had the brakes checked a few weeks before the accident. Always schedule smart when picking roads on a mountain, gravity is going to in the battle.

A Familiar Carhauler Pattern: Trailer Fires

I saw a story out of Longview Texas about another carhauler that caught fire. The story does not go into where on the trailer or tractor the autotransport fire started. It could be a freak accident and may not even be caused something eminating from the car carrier. Either way there have been too many stories about carhauler fires this summer. Of course, one fire is to many in my book, but there are definitely patterns that seem to be emerging in car hauler or autohauler related fires.

The two main areas that I keep seeing repeated patterns are in the tractor wheels around the brakes or axle assembly or the trailer wheels in the axle assembly. Both can be prevented with some critical maintenance. Here are some tips to mitigate safety risk:

Get your brakes checked often
Check your tire pressure before any trip
Check to make sure your trailer is not part of the Meritor Axle recall

As simple as these 3 steps are there are still car haulers who are not doing them because I read the accident reports from the news services.

Concerning the gentlemen whose carhauler just rolledover in California, I am not totally sure of the cause. What I am sure about is that an 80 ton car carrier does not have the agility of smaller vehicles. One lapse in judgment, one failed system, or one sudden stop, the entire trailer can flip over.

Its dangerous being a carhauler. In the last month I have seen pictures of trailers on fire, heard stories of a carhauler on trial for his life, and been forced to announce a recall on behalf of an axle manufacturer. The conclusion I get from this is that carhaulers have a dangerous profession. The risks of moving an 80 ton autotransport are overlooked by the public who wants new cars delivered to dealerships. Nevertheless, hundreds operate their carhauler trailer successfully everyday.

A tire fire on a carhauler, though not as commonplace as other accident causes, is still something to take seriously and prepare for. I pulled this photo from a recent Lake Johanna Carhauler fire in Minnesota and focused in on what appears to be the apex area of the fire

properly inflated tires and regular inspections of the tires, brakes, and axles could be the difference between a safe journey and disaster for the carhauler

According to insurance sources a Tire Fire like the one on this carhauler occured due to heat buildup in the the brakes or the axle, most likely malfunctioning, when the car slowed down or stopped. The heat buildup around the tire was great enough to get this carhauler nightmare blazing. Tire pressure can also be a factor in these sort of carhauling accidents.

After a dip during the Great Recession, the U.S. freight economy, particularly for trucking, is projected to grow significantly in the years ahead, according to American Trucking Associations' U.S. Freight Transportation Forecast to 2022.

The Forecast, the product of a collaboration between ATA, IHS Global Insight and Martin Labbe Associates, lays out the current state of the freight economy where trucking is the leading mode of transportation and projects an even more robust role for trucks in the future.

"The trucking industry continues to dominate the freight transportation industry in terms of both tonnage and revenue, comprising 67% of tonnage and 81% of revenue in 2010," ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello wrote in this year's forecast.

Overall, total freight tonnage is expected to grow by 24% by 2022, and revenue for the freight transportation industry is projected to rise 66% in that same timeframe. Trucking's share of that market will rise to 70% by 2022, though the industry's share of freight revenues will only increase to 81.4% from 81.2%.

In other surface modes, rail's overall share of tonnage will fall to 14.6% in 2022 from 15.3% in the baseline year of 2010. However, intermodal tonnage will rise 6.6% a year between 2011 and 2016, and 5.5% annually through 2022. Revenues for intermodal transportation will jump from $11.1 billion in 2010 to $30.7 billion in 2022.

PASADENA, Calif.—A defense attorney has told a Los Angeles County jury that a carhauler committed no crime when his runaway trailer crashed into other vehicles, killing two people in April 2009.

Attorney Edward Murphy argued Wednesday that the real crime was the lack of a runaway truck escape lane at the foot of the steep mountain road in the Los Angeles foothill suburb of La Canada Flintridge.

Murphy says driver Marcos Costa of Massachusetts had no criminal intention when he followed a GPS route over the San Gabriel Mountains to deliver a car to Southern California.

The attorney says the car hauler's brakes failed after overheating on the steep descent.
The rig smashed into a car carrying a father and daughter, who were killed.

Costa is charged with second-degree murder and other counts.

Fatal Carhauler Wreck Still Under Investigation

Virginia State Police are awaiting a report from the state medical examiner as to the cause of death of two motorists involved in separate fatalities last week. The single-vehicle crashes claimed the life of a Mississippi truck driver and a motorcyclist from Canada.

According to 1st Sgt. K.S. McCall, investigating officers are not sure if the drivers suffered some kind of medical problem that caused them to wreck. Both vehicles swerved from the road and ran into guardrails.

Theresa Davis, 51, of Mississaugh, Ontario, died Sunday afternoon, July 10, on Interstate 77 in Bland County after her southbound 2000 Honda Shadow V motorcycle veered off the road to the left and struck a guardrail, according to McCall. She died at the scene around 12:40 p.m., he said.

The victim was accompanied by her husband, who was riding a separate motorcycle, McCall said.
Master Trooper Thomas Roseberry was the investigating officer.

Joey Langley, 41, of Marietta, Miss., died early Tuesday morning, July 12, on Interstate 81 at the 72.8 mile marker in Wythe County, McCall reported. He was operating a northbound 2007 Peterbilt car hauler around 2:09 a.m. when the carhauler ran off the right side of the road into an embankment, traveled down the ditch line and through the guardrail, the officer said.

Trooper Jason Crowder investigated the wreck.

McCall pointed out it will take awhile for the medical examiner to conduct an autopsy in each case and determine the cause of death of the drivers.

Commentary:

A few thoughts. Its easy to forget how dangerous a highway can be for anyone let alone a fully loaded carhauler trailer. With tons of weight a typical autotransport does not have the agility of smaller vehicles. Crowded roadways, distracted drivers, and people that really dont look like they are licenses at all can make the highway system a dangerous place for todays carhauler or car carrier

According to the Dept. of Transportation, the agreement calls for Mexican trucks to comply with all Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and they must utilize electronic monitoring systems to track hours-of-service compliance. DOT will also review driving records and require drug testing of all drivers, to be analyzed by the Dept. of Health and Human Services at approved U.S. labs.

Mexican drivers will also have to prove “their ability to understand the English language and U.S. traffic signs.”

U.S. carriers will receive reciprocal authority to operate in Mexico.

While trucking lobbies opposed to the new U.S.-Mexico cross-border truck pilot program, have been more than vocal—even to the point of one having filed a federal suit against the bilateral agreement—there’s at least one expert on this segment of international trade who sees the deal struck by Mexico President Felipe Calderón and President Barack Obama in a clearly positive light.

For starters, Troy Ryley, managing director of Transplace Mexico, told FleetOwner that once Mexican carriers are enrolled in the pilot program, Texas “could become a center for distribution as Mexican trucks won’t be going far north unless they have backhauls secured, which will be difficult as Mexican carriers will not be allowed to carry U.S. domestic freight.” In addition, he said the presence of new terminal operations set up by Mexican carriers on the U.S. side of the border could help relieve some of the [freight] capacity issues in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Tucson and Albuquerque.”

Ryley pointed out that Transplace’s market expertise in this arena rests on it being a leading non-asset based third-party logistics (3PL) services provider and a “Top 10 freight capacity broker” in the U.S. with deep experience aiding customers shipping to Mexico and beyond.

Speaking to the very guts of the agreement in terms of free-trade fairness, Ryley remarked that “Keeping Mexican carriers out would be like the U.S. keeping out all the international airlines” that have landing rights here. “Every country in the world flies in here, but somehow we cannot put Mexican trucks on our roads?

“The reality is,” he continued, [that Mexican carriers] buy from the same trucking suppliers [as U.S. fleets] and many of the trucks run here today were built in Mexico. The capabilities are there [in Mexico] and that includes driving trucks.”

Social media are transforming the way America does business, and there’s no reason that shouldn’t include trucking. When it comes to traditional trucking products such as vehicles, systems and components, the development life cycle can be fairly long. The time span required from initial concept through design, research and development and testing before production can begin can be measured in years. Information-management technology, on the other hand, often has a much shorter development life.

What that means for those of us who supply the advanced technologies used to manage trucking companies today is that our objective has to be communicating more effectively with our customers and partners.
Traditionally, we have employed such practices as focus groups to accomplish this task, and while they yielded results, these groups were expensive, time-consuming and static.

Fixed in time, they simply could not address technology issues and customer and partner challenges in an effective and beneficial time frame.

But today, many trucking companies and industry suppliers of all types of technologies are successfully using social media communication channels such as blogging, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube to meet almost immediately the challenges and needs of customers and partners.

NAFTA: Mexican truckers to drive cargo into US interior

As the Obama administration prepares to honor a 17-year-old treaty with Mexico allowing that country’s long-haul trucks into the U.S. heartland, emotions are again at fever pitch as businesses on both sides of the border predict job losses and industry upheaval.

The North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA, included a provision that the United States and Mexico would allow each other’s trucks to haul cargo across the border for delivery anywhere inside the other country.

To comply with NAFTA, the Obama administration in April proposed a three-year pilot program with requirements for Mexican truckers that include a preliminary safety audit, purchase of U.S. insurance, English proficiency for drivers, truck inspections for every border crossing for at least the first three months, an 18-month probation period and a three-month renewal period for safety inspections after permanent authority is granted.

"Participating Mexican carriers and drivers would be required to comply with all applicable U.S. laws and regulations, including those concerned with motor carrier safety, customs, immigration, vehicle registration and taxation, and fuel taxation," according to the program’s legal description.

When the pilot program concludes, the Mexican haulers would receive the same authority granted U.S.-based truckers. Public comment on the proposed program ended last week, and the final version is expected later this year.

But the devil has been in the details in the United States as objections have arisen over safety, fair competition, reciprocity and other issues. Some Mexican carriers are concerned that opening the borders will encourage U.S. haulers to locate in Mexico and dominate their industry.

"I wasn’t in Congress when they voted for NAFTA," said U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-Texas. "But I think we signed the treaty and we should follow the treaty and respect its conditions."

Mexican Heavy Trucking in the United States

Uncertainty still Reigns.

There are ideas that sound like good ideas but lead to
bad results. This happens, its part of life. There are mediocre ideas that turn out good. Then there are ideas that are just plain old fashioned rotten bad...I think we found one.

There are 22 articles flowing through Google News on this specific subtopic of the transportation industry. There are lots of questions, but I think there are some MAJOR implications that are going to emerge out of what appears to be a sector specific issue.

On the surface, it looks like beauracratic trade policy. One government (Mexico)wants free access to a wealthier countries jobs (U.S). U.S business industries want cheap labor to drive their trucks at the expense of millions of American jobs. This kind of sums up NAFTA. I think its deeper than that though.

You have a huge election coming up in which a candidate who ran on the popular will of an angry public was elected with hopes of challenging Washington corruption and the all out special interest assault on our jobs and economic way of life.

In many polls the perception is that the current administration is not doing this. This can be refuted with claims that the economy was so wrecked from the Bush administration that it is unrealistic and unfair to expect the current administration to undo 8 years of Bush mistakes. This is plausible and is a good point. Except there is a new problem that throws this equation out of balance.

Why is a “President of the people” supporting a proposal that will:

• Cost millions of Americans their jobs
• Drive wages down
• Spend our tax dollars on EOBR’s to help another country
• Risk our public safety

This is an easy issue to explain to American public and will serve as a death nail to the incumbent party in the next election. But the scariest part of all is I don’t see how the current President is benefiting by doing it?

In conclusion this issue could easily sway a larger number of the us public to remove their support from the Democratic party. It is not beyond the realm of possibility to believe that this could decide an election.

Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) sent a letter to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood outlining his opposition to the U.S. proposal to buy electronic onboard recorders for Mexican trucks that will travel within the United States.

“I do not believe this concept is fair for U.S. carriers who are not eligible for such payments,” Pryor wrote in a letter dated Thursday.

National on-highway diesel prices climbed for the second week in a row, rising 4.4 cents to $3.976. The national average is up almost 96 cents from last year.

New England experienced the smallest cost increase at 1.4 cents; California prices rose the most, 6.7 cents, to $4.323, up $1.17 from last year.

Swedish truck maker AB Volvo announced that Volvo Trucks will sell heavy hybrid trucks under the name Volvo FE Hybrid to customers in selected European markets.

The trucks will initially be produced in a limited series of about 100 vehicles starting in June, and will be delivered from 2011-2013 to customers in selected European markets. The trucks will be used primarily in urban distribution and refuse operations.

DOE Boosts Diesel, Gas Price Projections

Cites Soaring Crude Price of More than $100 Per Barrel

The Department of Energy boosted its projected diesel average this year by 38 cents, to $3.81 a gallon, though the most recent weekly price already tops that level.

Diesel averaged $2.99 at the pump last year, the department said, adding that the price will average $3.82 next year, up 31 cents from last month’s forecast.

Gasoline will average $3.56 a gallon this year — 41 cents over its forecast from last month, DOE said in its monthly short-term energy outlook released Tuesday.

Regular gas, which averaged $2.78 last year, will rise to an average $3.57 in 2012, which is 27 cents higher than last month’s forecast.

The higher projections are due in large part to soaring crude oil prices, which have jumped $20 in the past month to more than $105 a barrel this week, DOE said.

It projected crude oil will be close to $105 a barrel in December and remain near that level through 2012.

The report cited volatility in oil markets, saying there is about a 35% that oil could swing either above $110 or below $90 per barrel by the end of the year.

Diesel and gasoline have each spiked by about 30 cents in the past two weeks, according to DOE’s most recent weekly pump-price survey released Monday — to $3.871 and $3.52 per gallon, respectively.

A combination of the trucking industry trying to catch up with the economic recovery and adapting to government regulations that are still being developed will extend a capacity shortage through 2013, a trucking economist said at an online seminar Feb. 10.Image by Getty Images via @daylife

The shortfall will peak above 250,000 units in 2012 but continue at about 150,000 units in 2013, predicted Noel Perry, a senior consultant with FTR Associates and principal of Transportation Fundamentals. He said the industry is pursuing productivity increases through greater utilization of existing equipment, and miles per tractor were up more than 10 percent in 2010. Without that productivity improvement, “this crisis could be twice as bad, peaking at around 400,000 units,” he said.

Perry added that capacity utilization has recovered to above 90 percent, but rate increases haven’t kept pace. He said carriers are more productive and profitable, without increasing rates much. “From now on if a [carrier] wants to handle more freight, he is going to have to hire drivers and buy equipment,” he said.

Small Businesses’ Confidence Hits Three-Year High

A survey released Tuesday showed that confidence among small businesses hit a three-year high, Bloomberg reported.

The National Federation of Independent Business optimism index rose to 94.1 in January, the highest since the recession began in December 2007 as the outlook for sales and profits improved, the group said Tuesday.

The reading was lower than the average 100.7 during the last expansion that started in November 2001, Bloomberg reported.

Small businesses are defined as independent enterprises that employ up to 500 people.

Oil Finishes Week Over $91 a Barrel

Oil finished the week over $91 a barrel, up more than $3 from last Friday, Bloomberg reported.

Benchmark light sweet crude futures finished the day Friday at $91.54 a barrel, up 14 cents from Thursday on the Mercantile Exchange.

The increased price this week was due in part to U.S. economic data showing stronger factory output and continuing worldwide demand, Bloomberg said,Image via Wikipedia

Diesel and gasoline have both risen for the past six weeks in the Department of Energy’s weekly price surveys, with diesel topping $3.33 and gasoline near $3.09 per gallon.

DOE’s next survey will be released Tuesday afternoon in Washington due to the federal holiday Monday.

How bad wil the driver shortage get?

By 2012, the industry will be looking at shortage of 400,000 drivers, according to Eric Starks, president of FTR Associates.

The issues the industry has been facing for years have not gone away, including an aging driver population and a minimum driving age that precludes recruiting recent high-school graduates.

Add to that a shrunken recruiting pipeline. During the recession, fleets slashed recruiting, human resources and training departments. Driving schools closed down. As a result, Starks says the industry can hire only about 100,000 drivers into the market each quarter. It's like a funnel. Even if you have a million people that want to be truckers, only a certain number can fit through that hiring/processing funnel at a time.

Then there's the regulatory issue. CSA 2010 will result in drivers who appear to be unsafe getting pushed out of the system as carriers refuse to hire them. Likely changes to hours of service regulations could affect productivity by 6 percent, FTR estimates Â- meaning an extra 150,000 trucks, and drivers, needed to move the same amount of freight.

Image via WikipediaCrackdowns in documentation required to get a commercial driver's license, designed to address the hot-button issue of illegal immigrants, also will pull a significant number of drivers out of the available labor pool. Some believe this could have an even more chilling effect than hours of service changes.

Further complicating the driver situation are attacks by the federal government and state agencies on the use of independent contractors. Although these efforts aim to crack down on the improper "misclassification" of employees as contractors to avoid taxes, many legitimate owner-operators could be affected. The Obama administration has upped its efforts to ferret out such "misclassification." And one bill has been introduced in Washington, D.C., that would remove the Section 530 "safe harbor" provision much of the trucking industry relies on to justify its use of independent contractors.
